Wilco: YHF Demos

It is no secret that I am a huge fan of Wilco. With an upcoming new DVD (Ashes of American Flags ) and CD (title unkown … but rumor suggests “Wilco … The Album”), I thought I would share the YHF Demos bootleg that is floating around cyberspace.
Die-hards will recognize this as the Wilco’s own “Basement Tapes” – unreleased material and alternate takes from their (arguably) most creative phase: the recording of the epic, instant-classic record Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (recorded 2001, released 2002).
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, of course, has an interesting history about its controversial release. Highlighting the state of the music industry and it’s lack of artistic integrity. Well documented in the movie “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart”. Well worth watching by any music fan (and essential for Wilco fans).
This collection of songs is the holy grail for those Wilco fans. Missing jewels from the recording session make this worth the listen (“Venus Stop the Train” and “Not for the Season” are stand-outs). But I really enjoy the alternate takes on the other great songs. Much of the allure of this record is contained in the mixing (the “noise” stuff) and to hear these songs presently differently is like trying someone else’s lasagna recipe: familiar, but different.
For those who have never heard a Wilco record, go buy a copy of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Seriously; you’ll thank me. Then download this addendum.
