Watchmen - My Review

March 7th 2009 20:39
I know this is normally a Music Blog, bu had to put my two cents in ...

wat
Watchmen

I saw the movie and really, really, really enjoyed it. I had read the GN, however. I loved the painstaking and heart-felt re-creation of it by someone who was obviously respectful of the source material.

That being said, I do not think it would be as enjoyable for someone who did not read it. Stuff happens so fast and rapid-fire, that it leaves little time for reflection (which reading it obviously allows for). This story is built more around character development and imagery then straight plot and/or story. Therefore, the movie can be difficult to ‘take-in’ without being familiar with it (it will do better on DVD/Bluray). Cae in point: after my screening was over, I heard a skinny-legged teenage girl ask her friend, “Did you get it?”.

Do the themes still come through? Sure. The definitions of right and wrong (and how we all see them defined differently) are enlarged to a grand scale. What is a Hero? Who is a Villain? Are there absolutes in this world? This is what ultimately this story tries to ask.

So my recommendation is this:
1. Read the GN (if if you’ve never read one, this will work for you).
2. See the movie
3. Buy the bluray

BTW, the opening credit title sequence was one of the finest bits of film I have ever seen - to the tune of Dylan's "Times They are A Changin;" no less.

I watched the movie first, and then I read the comic, then watched the movie again.

I loved the movie right after watching it, but reading the comic made me understand it to a whole 'nother level. I wrote a review of it too on my blog (Grudging Geek).

The thing about the book is that it is so deep, to make it into a movie in full form would take probably two two-hour long movies. No studio would do this in this economic climate, since that would be really risky (a truly hit or miss affair).

The second time I watched the movie, it was much more fulfilling and it gave me this tone at the end that made me say to my friends, "This whole movie is just a big joke."

(btw, I'm kind of a watchmen fan. I even have the beanie)
