THE ALBUM THAT CHANGED YOUR LIFE
July 12th 2009 00:45
I was listening to the Soundcheck radio program the other day and the topic was "The Album That Changed Your Life". It got me thinking about my own experience and Significant Albums.
Many come to mind, in fact. Wilco's A Ghost is Born turned me from a Classic Rock Snob to an Indie Rock Hipster.
Bob's "The Free-Wheelin Bob Dylan" inspired me to learn to play the guitar.
Sublime's "40 Oz to Freedom" record was the soundtrack for my Lost Weekend (the 1990s).
But if I had to pick one, it would be Led Zeppelin III.
During high school, all my friends would exchange tapes and listen to our Walkmans as we travled to and fro on the school bus. During sports trips, sometimes long rides ensured. This is were I first broadened my musical pallet and first heard Zep's masterpiece.
Up to that point, I was just a child, musicallly. Digesting whatever KISS FM and Top 40 told me to listen to. Not until I heard Zep did I find something that connected with me. Stuck me to the bone. A true epiphany. I had grown up.
I know, I know. Zep III is not even there best record (PG is, of course), but this was the first to strike a chord. Was it the first five notes of "Since I've Been Lovin You"? Was the the sublime acoustic rocker "Bron-y-aur Stomp"? Probaby the album as a whole that did it. Just perfect.

Since I was 5 I've been listening to this album. I used to listen to this album every night when I was trying to go to sleep, and since then, it's always had this relaxing effect on me. I feel that Bob Marley is one of the greatest musicians of all time, and his music is so much more than most people's.
