Ryan Adams: Most Quality Output Since Y2K
December 27th 2008 04:43
Not sure why, but I’ve really been into Ryan Adams lately.
And it is not because of his recent LP Cardinalogy (which I did not purchase … yet. Heard a few tunes on the radio and felt luke warm).
No, my recent mini-obsession stems from my recent discovery of some of his notorious unreleased material. I dare you to listen to 48 Hours, The Suicide Handbook or (to a lesser degree) the Elizabethtown Sessions and not dig it.
48 Hours is an alt.country masterpiece. It deserves to be up there with No Depression, Trace, Tomorrow The Green Grass, Strangers Almanac or any other records hoisted into the upper echelon of that genre. Sure a few tunes turned up on Demolition, but Karina is a work of art.
The Suicide Handbook is an acoustic gem. In my humble opinion, RA is at his best when paired with the acoustic guitar. I have heard that he cannot play it as well since some sort of wrist injury, which really is a shame. We now have to deal with his electric Grateful Dead-esq noodlings on the electric. Oh well.
Love hime or hate him, he has put out a lot of material since Y2K. He may need an editor, but I'll still argue that he has put out the most quality product since the millenium.
For further reading, see this monstrous and thorough thread.
Or better yet, go buy a copy of Gold or Cold Roses. You won't be disappointed.
