Ryan Adams: The Suicide Handbook
March 21st 2009 04:12
With Ryan recently getting married and (sorta) retiring, I thought I would post up my favorite unofficial release from him: Suicide Handbook.
Ryan is notorious for having a large backlog of unreleased material. Dude is nothing if not prolific. Not only has he put out a lot of great albums since he started his career with Whiskeytown, but his unreleased stuff puts many contempories stuff to shame. Some people point to 48 Hours or maybe F*%ker as favorites, but for me it is Suicide Handbook.
This is Ryan at his best: stripped down songs with just acoustic guitar as support. There is no over-polish like Gold; no jangly new-wave vibe like Love is Hell. Just great songs played in an honest way.
Recorded in 2001 during the height of Ryan's burgeoning song-writing prowess and before the wrist break incident (which I have heard made it more uncomfortable to play acoustic). Standout tracks include a wicked version of "Touch, Feel, Lose" and sweet renderings of "La Cienga Just Smiled" and "Just Saying Hi" (a.k.a. "Answering Bell").
To quote RA, this is it: Download

I am still working my way through Ryan's catalog - to me, he is an inspiration.
Finding this album, for me, was as important as Patty Griffin's unreleased Silver Bell was - maybe it saved my life, I don't know.
