New (to me) Music: Neutral Milk Hotel
May 29th 2010 21:29
It is impossible to keep up with all the music that comes out. Therefore, it seems that I always come across something that has been out forever that blows me away. Case in Point: Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.
This record was released in the late 1990s and it just now came across my radar, despite being considered one the best indie rock record of all time (amazon.com had it at #2 on their list).
It is a wonderful, emotional, heartfelt record with an eclectic sound that mixes folk, rock and storytelling.
Jeff Magnum apparently suffered some mental trouble after his magnum opus, so this may be his lasting statement. This adds a little mystique to the album, as well (wikipedia link)
On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being Styx and 10 being Zeppelin), I have to give it a solid 8.0 to 8.5. Check it out. Please.
