Musical Guilty Pleasures

I saw a Soundstage performance from Alanis Morrisette the other day and it got me thinking about Musical Guilty Pleasures.
Alanis is definitely one for me. I am not sure why, exactly. My tastes usually don’t lean so “pop”, but, then again, she is not terrible pop. She has got an edge (both lyrically and sonically) that sets her apart from her contemporaries. Songs like “All I Really Want”, “Uninvited” and “Thank You” are really quite good – despite being radio hits.
Joe Jackson is another guilty pleasure. Not only “pop”, not only 1980s music (the worst decade), but piano based music (something I generally do not like; I favor guitar based tunes). But a song like “Breaking Us In Two” is just devastatingly good.
I have a weakness for female alt-rock singers and Shirley Manson is definitely one. Garbage was not the best band of the post-grunge movement, but many songs still hold up today as uber-sexy noise rock (songs like “Special” and – especially – “Push It”).
Hot August Nights anyone? Neil Freaking Diamond. Need I say more? “Solitary Man”, “Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon” and “Sweet Caroline” cannot be denied. Enough said.
Possibly the worst musical genre since harpsichords were invented, 1980s Hair Metal just plain sucks. But I listened to all of Guns N’ Roses records like they were Bach. Yes, even Use Your Illusion. I suppose it is because they were the first band that really blew me away (I was in 8th grade when Appetite came out). Perfect timing.
