MTV VMA - Remeber when they mattered?
September 17th 2009 00:48
I know, I know. VMA in the news because a jackass interrupted a tart (good call Obama). But let's be serious: the MTV Video Music Awards hasn't mattered since, oh I don't know, when did MTV stop playing videos? 1992? 1993?
I will nominate 1992 as the last year MTV mattered. Remember: that years awards show?
Kris from Nirvana self-inflicted face smash.
Axl & Elton.
The Black Crowes marajuana pants.
The Chili Peppers giving it away.
Great performances - ever the underremebered ones:
U2 (at their peak)
Pearl Jam (just getting started)
Eric Clapton (unplugged)
Yep. Grunge killed MTV. Well, thats not fair. They really killed themselves by abandining music in favor of reality TV.
I kinda miss those days when you looked forward to a video. I remeber being so fired up after seing GnR "Patience" or Plant's "Eyes on You". Even Madonna (who I am not a fan of) provided interesting work with "Justify My Love" and "Like a Prayer".
I barely remember seeing videos in the post-grunge era. Radiohead's "Paranoid Android" comes to mind, as does Oasis' "Wonderwall". After that. Zilch.
Bummer.
