Jay Bennett: RIP
May 29th 2009 00:11
We lost an extremely talented (and extremely under-rated) musician this week: former WIlco member Jay Bennett.
Check out this interesting evolution of the song "Poor Places" with Jay.
Jay was a driving force behind Wilco's shift from alt.country twang of the debut record to the experimental, genre-bending middle years spanning the records from Being There to Summerteeth to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Without Jay's sonic, multi-instrumental contributions, these records would not be what they are: classics.
He was (arguably) unfairly portrayed in the documentary "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart". It is a little sad to see this as his legacy.
For a taste of Wilco live with Jay, Owl & Bear (the unofficial Live Wilco Archive), was posted their favorite Live Shows (available for download).
He had a quirky, but under-appreciated solo career. His latest record, Whatever Happend I Apologize is available for free download.
Rest In Peace.
