Fear and Loathing ...

"And they wonder why those of us in our twenties refuse to work an 80 hour week. Just so we can afford to buy their BMW's? Why we aren't interested in their counterculture that they invented? As if we did not see them disembowel their revolution for a pair of running shoes. But the question remains: What are we going to do now? How can we repair all damage we have inherited? Fellow graduates, the answer is simple. The answer is...(shuffling speech cards)... the answer is...I don't know."
Lelaina Pierce, “Reality Bites” (1994)Let’s face the fact: The Baby-Boomers have ruined America.
There is no aspect of American Society that they have marched in like Ghengis Khan and conquered; leaving nothing behind except smoking ruins and DNA samples. Are they the most hypocritical bunch ever?
They started Earth Day, but proceeded to ruin the planet.
They preached racial harmony but forced Obama into a racial contest (despite him wanting to rise above),
They espoused the benefits of communal living and cursed possession craving consumerism then turned into Wall Street yuppies with Porsches and Rolex.
They said “Its all about the music, man!” while dropping acid then turned the industry into a stale bread snoozefest where the only goal is the bottom line.
The hippies abandoned their ideals fast. Altamont may have been the final straw. Not a very long haul for the revolution. Now, we have to endure endless recycling of Baby-Boomer culture and nostalgia (do we really need another Stones live album?).
Ugghh...
Generation X could have saved the music industry. There are some real gems out there: Ryan Adams, Wilco, Iron & Wine, Radiohead, Bright Eyes, ... But they never get played on terrestrial radio where Lynyrd Skynrd and Grand Funk Railroad are still king.
Have faith, my friends. The “generation of permanent cripples” (as Hunter S. Thompson wrote of the BB in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) have almost lost their power and influence. As soon as they start robbing our social security, we can step and and set things right, once again.
