Best of 2009 ... So Far
July 26th 2009 03:05
Amazon.com, Spin Magazine and other various online media outlets have weighed in with the best music of 2009 … so far.
I have to agree with most of these choices (too much hip hop, however). But it got me thinking: What song has a chance to be the tune that comes to define this year? It seems each year there is one that crosses genres, generations and radio stations to become utterly inescapable, as well as, enormously popular. Past examples include the ubiquitous “Paper Planes” and “Hey-Ya”.
It seems to me there are a few contenders already. Certainly, everyone’s darling Grizzly Bear has to be in the discussion. Probably their song “Two Weeks” meets this criteria. Also, Matt and Kim’s “Daylight” also deserves consideration (thanks to the certain beverage commercial).
When it comes to quality, I would like to suggest Neko Case’s “People Got a Lotta Nerve” , Iron and Wine’s “Love Vigilantes”, St. Vincent’s “Actor Out of Work” or Andrew Bird’s “Anonanimal”.
For songs that I couldn’t get out of my head, perhaps I should nominate the Dirty Projectors “Stillness is the Move” or the Thermals “Now We Can See”.
On a personal note, I would also like to throw in “Wilco (the Song)” off Wilco (the Album) from Wilco (the Band) as my personal song of 2009.
But, we still have a few months ahead of us, yet …
