Andrew Bird's Noble Beast
January 7th 2009 03:31
Andrew Bird has a new LP coming out: “Noble Beast”. NPR is streaming a free preview for your listening pleasure.
I am a big fan of his record “Mysterious Production of Eggs” from a few years back (high on my list for Best Since Y2K). Definitely worth picking up if you do not have it (or have not been introduced to Andrew’s music). The songs “Savoy”, “Nervous Tick” and “Fake Palindromes” alone are worth the money. He is fresh air on a sometimes dusty and corporate musical landscape. Get this record! Now!
I also recently picked up “Armchair Apocrypha”. Good on the first couple of spins, but not as brilliant as “Eggs” (I probably need to give it a few more spins: I rarely like a record immediately). This one usually has better reviews on forums and what not.
NPR.org, December 23, 2008 - Andrew Bird is an unlikely rock star. A classically trained violinist and former swing-jazz musician, he performs a quirky mix of Gypsy ballads, jazz, folk and art-rock, with frequently whistled melodies. It's a sound that leaves critics swooning and fans giddy with the kind of devotion normally reserved for pop idols. At a recent performance in Chicago, a crush of more than 15,000 Bird fans filled Millennium Park to hear the gangly singer, complete with young women in the audience screaming, "I love you!"
