Album Review: Death Cab for Cutie’s Narrow Stairs
June 14th 2008 19:55
I have never heard a DC4C album before this one (are they still called “albums”?). I bought based upon hearing the single “I Will Posses Your Heart” on XM Radio (sorry for another aside: satellite radio is a must-have for music fans in this post-Y2K world). Something I never do, usually, but this song was awesome. Five good minutes of instrumental jam before the lyrics kick in (a real FU to corporate radio, no?). A real Instant Classic, in my humble opinion. So I thought, what the heck, gotta try something new.
The rest of the LP (are the still “LPs”?) is … ok. Kinda like M. Night Shamamamlan movie: entertaining during the show, but forgettable once you leave the theatre.
DC4C reminds me of that nerdy dude in high school who played clarinet in the marching band and got “A”s in all his AP classes. Imagine that kid grown up and realized that woodwinds are dorky and chicks dig pop-rock. You get excellent enunciation, concise song-writing and smart literary lyrics sometimes about math (seriously: there is a song called “Long Division”).
I don’t want to get too false an impression. This is good record (are they still called “records”?). I rarely like a record on the first few spins (exceptions include Pink Floyd’s Meddle and Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks – kick ass from the first note). After a month or so I predict I will like it better.
If your want to download a few off iTunes to get a flavor, try these:
“I Will Posses Your Heart”
“Cath”
“Long Division”
“The Ice Is Getting Thinner”
I am curious if any of you have thoughts on this CD (are they still … joke is old already). Post your comment, please!
