Across The Universe (the movie): Really?

I just ran across the movie “Across the Universe” on TV the other day. And my reaction is this: really? … I mean … really?
Look, I love the Beatles songs (Rubber Soul onward) as much as the next guy, but it seems to me that this was a completely unnecessary venture. Not just that, but is kinda sad, is it not? Here is a band that was supposedly the pinnacle of baby-boomer musical culture and what have they done? Sold out, chopped up, and square-peg/round-holed it into a post-Y2K chick flick / off-Broadway musical.
My goodness.
What happened to all the hippie idealism? What happened to “it’s all about the MUSIC, man!” vibe? Is there nothing sacred for the boomers anymore? Is there nothing of merit and integrity that they have not torn down and slapped a price tag on?
What’s next? A museum at Woodstock? Oh, wait … never mind.
